Post-Apocalyptic and Dystopian Literature of the 21st Century  II

Test your knowledge of recent Post-Apocalyptic and Dystopian Literature.  If you love the classics—Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange, et al – as well as the late 20th century offerings by such writers as Jack Womack and Jean Hegland, you’ll probably have read most of these below.

 It’s a wicked world that lies ahead . . .

This quiz is now finished and has been disabled. If you want to see the answers clich HERE

Name the novel:

1. Set in and around a vast techno-sexy social media company, run by the "Three Wise Men," based on a philosophy of total transparency, we see such inventions as "TruYou," a single integrated user interface that executes and streamlines every internet interaction and purchase: "One button for the rest of your life online." And if you want to go off-line, good luck.

2. Describes life in a near future New York, where passersby can rate your attractiveness automatically and Staten Island is the hot new neighborhood.

3. Trilogy which takes place in an unspecified future time in the totalitarian nation of Panem, consisting of the lavishly rich and technologically advanced Capitol and twelve (formerly thirteen) poorer districts from which each year one boy and one girl, picked in a lottery, must participate in a fight until only one is left standing.

4. In the final chapter, set in the not-too-distant future, sending a "T" (text) is the preferred method of communicating, even when your friend is in the same room.

5. French graphic novel in which an experiment in 2014 to counteract global warming causes an ice age that kills nearly all life on Earth.  Recently made into an English-language film by Bong Joon-Ho.  (Either title accepted)

6. An inexplicable plague has struck the world, causing all of society to collapse on "Last Night," turning the infected into flesh-eating zombies. But events stabilize and “Mark Spitz” and his fellow “sweepers”—survivors of the apocalypse—patrol parts of New York City on a mission to make it inhabitable once again.

7. The year is 2044 and the only way you can escape the violent unrest and grim surroundings is by spending your waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be.

8. In this future post-scarcity dystopian world everyone is turned "Pretty" by extreme cosmetic surgery upon reaching age 16.

9. Set in 23rd-century Thailand, this post-oil society is powered by calories, and spring-driven motors are wound up by bioengineered mammoths on treadmills.

10.  Times Square has been dirty-bombed and climate catastrophe has sunk the outskirts.  The streets are mean.  But if you’re rich you can retreat to a fulltime virtual reality called the Limnosphere.
